American Idol ratings dip- Who Or What is to blame?

With the knowledge that American Idol is sliding in their ratings this year, the theories abound have all targeted David Archuletta and his fans. First, I personally think that this theory is ludicrous. Are David A fans doing anymore then any other competitor’s fans? I do not think so. One could argue that competitors like Brooke White and Jason Castro may be the negatvie factors? Are they really? No, not even Brook White and Jason Castro is responsible for the ratings slide.

I think that American Idols ratings slide is combination of events and other televisions shows.

For the first time American Idol had competition on one of their slotted nights and were in direct competition with another show that enjoys high ratings. Big Brother 9 winter debut, eviction night did air at the same time as American Idol at 7pm. Then the hockey playoffs are an event that the different team’s fans would want to watch. Baseball has started which also draws a huge fan base and viewers. Then we have the news and following of the Presidential race that may be deemed as one of the most important races in American history. The potential to have America’s first black President and first women president has definitely given people something to talk about, debate, discuss and even argue about.

This above combined with the fact that Michael Johns had been eliminated far to early in the competition and now Carly Smithson left some Idol fans disgruntled and angry this year. Some of these fans may have chosen to tune out of the show for the rest of the season. Many Idol fans will usually stop watching the show once their favourite is eliminated.

I do not think that David A fans are doing anything uniquely different then anyone else’s fans. American Idol encourages fans to vote as much as they like. They have never wanted to do anything about over-voting; it will result in these types of eliminations. On the other hand, at the end, the right people have always won Idol Title, including Taylor Hicks.

Finally, a show that can boast that they enjoyed 45 million votes for the show is hardly doing poorly. American Idol will survive for the two years they have left to grace our screens. The buzz is that after 2010 show that will be it for American Idol and will not longer be aired.

In my opinion, neither David Archuletta nor his fans are to blame for the ratings slide. I really feel it a combination of the things above that has contributed to fewer viewers.

  1. I agree with your analysis…

For one thing, some parts of the south, like our neighborhood that use the same cable company, lost our cable access from late in the afternoon to 12 midnight last Wednesday, result night. I don’t know how many households were affected who normally watch AI, but still, lost cable access would affect the ratings I would think… I was just glad I had a portable, mini color TV (just thru an antenna) that was able to access the fox channel here where I am residing on Wednesday.. I would not want to miss the elimination of Brooke. :-) People should just stop blaming the remaining contestants in the show. My concept is if a person had watched AI from Top 24 to now, they will still be interested to watch. I don’t believe there are that much sour/sore losers out there. A fact is many have decided not to watch after season 6, because season 6 was the weakest season of all. I’ve heard many of my friends said they will not watch anymore. I was thinking of the same thing, until I just happened to watch one night and noticed that there are quite a few talented contestants this time around who were allowed to play an instrument or two. Maybe the others that quit did not even know the change in the format. I will continue to watch until one wins. Not my ideal 4, but they are not annoying either in my sight and sound. No more emotional roller coaster ride to watch, that’s the main thing for me, that’s said, I can now enjoy the rest of the show. :-)

  2. Let us not also forget Dawgy Bear, Ditzy Bear, and Papa Bear’s inane, insane, incoherent, and thoroughly unenjoyable ‘bantering’ that wastes precious time. I hit the “Mute” button everytime they begin talking over one another, because they think they are amusing us, while they are repulsing us instead. I know Paula’s pain meds (there, the pink elephant in the corner is exposed) for her chronic dancer’s injuries are to blame for her blathering but the producers REALLY need to tell her to TIME HER MEDS IN A MORE APPROPRIATE FASHION. When you know you would never let your child be in a carpool if she were driving, well, there you go. In any other job, her behavior would get her fired. She needs a computerized converter much like the ones autistic children use to speak for them; aka like the ones used in “Autism, the Musical.” (On HBO) Randy’s ‘catch phrases’ are so old, they’re moldy. “Da bomb, hot molten lava.” Give me a break. “Pitch problems.” YAWN. You see where I’m coming from. As you can see when you watch the contestants, only Simon’s opinion carries REAL weight. Their relief is palpable only when HE says they were good. Along with what you and others have written, the telephone call in’s segment is boring and irrelevant. The song choices are far too outdated for the most part, even though they are from talented musicians. Ryan Seacrest, well…I think he’s been gleefully mean quite a few times. No one likes a metrosexual bully, even if they beg for forgiveness afterwards.(That Michael Johns thing was just lowdown, dirty, rotten, cruel.) He must have sold his soul to the devil in order to do this job. His fawning and ‘consoling’ Brooke last week was almost creepy, ala the stalker in Uma Thurman’s case. She DID walk away from him, did anyone else notice that? Well, there you have it. Thats what I think the big problem is, along with your insightful analysis. Cheerio, mate.

  3. Your article is right on. Let me add another reason. They lost a lot of fans because of the terrible way they have treated Taylor Hicks since he won. I guess American Idol does not care who the voters voted to win, they just care about how much the winner can line their pockets.
